Service and maintenance: extending the operational life of military clearance assets

For armed forces, operational readiness depends not only on the performance of deployed systems, but on their sustained reliability over time. Mechanical clearance assets in particular require structured maintenance and periodic overhaul to ensure continued availability, safety and compliance with military requirements.

In early 2019, the German Army initiated a scheduled overhaul programme for a fleet of mechanical clearance systems at Global Clearance Solutions (GCS) facilities in southern Germany. The programme focused on restoring full operational capability through a comprehensive technical refurbishment carried out by GCS specialist teams in Stockach.

Structured overhaul based on operational experience

The overhaul process involved the complete disassembly, inspection and reassembly of each system and its key components. Throughout the process, GCS technicians assessed wear, ageing and obsolescence to determine which parts required replacement, refurbishment or upgrade. The objective was to return each platform to a condition comparable to new, while ensuring compatibility with current operational and maintenance standards.

With the return of the first overhauled system to the German Army in December 2019, GCS completed its first full workshopbased system refurbishment under this programme. The work drew on extensive internal expertise in clearance platforms, military maintenance procedures and operational requirements.

The Head of Product Development at GCS and a former EOD operator, explains:

"Maintaining and overhauling military clearance assets is a complex task. It requires detailed system knowledge, an understanding of operational use and strict adherence to military maintenance processes."

Supporting long-term readiness

The systems undergoing overhaul were originally delivered to support counter-IED operations during international deployments and have since remained in service through regular upgrades and maintenance. Over time, mechanical assets are subject to material fatigue, component failure and evolving operational requirements, making periodic overhaul essential.

GCS supports military customers by providing structured lifecycle services that go beyond routine maintenance. These services are designed to extend service life, reduce unplanned downtime and ensure that equipment remains aligned with current operational needs.

Where required, overhaul programmes can also include targeted modifications. These may address new safety regulations, changes in operational doctrine or specific user requirements, such as the integration of additional sensors or adapted operator interfaces.

Flexible delivery models

While the German Army overhaul was conducted at GCS facilities in Germany, the company also provides overhaul and refurbishment services at customer locations, including military bases and overseas deployments. This flexibility allows armed forces to select the most appropriate service model based on availability, logistics and operational constraints.

Under the ongoing programme, GCS plans to complete the regular overhaul of a total of seven systems, including associated tools, attachments and workshop infrastructure, through to 2022.

By combining engineering expertise, field experience and structured maintenance processes, GCS supports armed forces in sustaining mechanical clearance capabilities over the long term, ensuring that critical assets remain safe, reliable and operationally relevant.
