In June 2024, Global Clearance Solutions (GCS) completed the pro bono clearance of a designated site in Bucha intended for the construction of a new medical facility. The site was formally handed over on 20 June, enabling the next phase of construction to proceed.

Clearance combined with risk-awareness training

In addition to clearing the site, GCS delivered Provincial Explosive Awareness and Reporting (PEAR) training as part of a broader riskreduction approach. The training was provided to 35 medical staff from the Kyiv Regional Psychoneurological Hospital in Vorzel, who will be involved in operating and supporting the new facility.

Despite demanding working conditions and extended shifts, participants completed the training with the support of GCS local and international specialists. The programme focused on recognising explosive hazards, understanding reporting procedures and managing risk in environments where contamination may still be present.

Construction personnel who will be working on the site also received training in explosivethreat awareness, supporting safe conduct of building activities once work begins.

Supporting recovery through local engagement

The Bucha project reflects GCS's approach to recovery support in Ukraine, combining clearance, training and onsite engagement rather than treating these activities separately.

As Dmytro Salimonov, General Manager of GCS Ukraine, explains:

"While many foreign companies paused activities after the start of the war, we chose to develop our engagement in Ukraine early on. That commitment allows us to provide practical, sustainable support for reconstruction where it is most urgently needed."

Safe ground for essential services

The cleared site will host a medical facility focused on trauma and mentalhealth care, addressing needs that remain acute in communities affected by occupation and violence. Clearance and training activities carried out by GCS ensure that the facility can be constructed and operated on land verified as safe for staff, patients and contractors.

By donating its time, expertise and resources, GCS supports early recovery efforts and reinforces the principle that safe ground is the foundation for rebuilding lives and essential services.
