Every year, landmines and other explosive hazards continue to injure or kill thousands of people worldwide. A significant proportion of the victims are children. These numbers represent daily risks faced by families living in contaminated areas long after conflict has ended.
On the UN International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action, Global Clearance Solutions (GCS) wants to highlight both the scale of this ongoing threat and the people working to reduce it.
Across humanitarian clearance operations, GCS teams and partners work to locate, identify and remove landmines, unexploded ordnance and improvised explosive devices. The objective is clear: reduce risk, restore safe access and allow communities to live, move and rebuild without fear.
Mine Awareness Day is an opportunity to acknowledge the professionalism and commitment of those working on the ground, and to recognise that mine action is not only about technology and procedures, but about protecting lives and enabling recovery.
