Global Clearance Solutions AG (GCS) has formally handed over the first of three GCS-200 mechanical demining systems to Ukraine during the Ukraine Mine Action Conference in Lausanne.
The handover took place on the second day of the conference and marked the transition from strategic commitments to operational implementation. The system was handed over to Ihor Bezkaravainyi, Deputy Minister of Economy of Ukraine, and Roman Prymush, Deputy Head of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, in the presence of representatives from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and Dr. Jens Amrhein, Head of the Mine Action Unit of the Swiss Armed Forces.
The delivery forms part of Switzerland's CHF 4.6 million humanitarian demining package, announced the previous day by Viola Amherd, President of the Swiss Confederation and Head of the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport. The package includes the procurement of three GCS mechanical demining systems, as well as specialised drone technology, transport vehicles, operator training and service and maintenance support for a period of three years.
The first GCS-200 system, which was displayed outside the conference venue, is scheduled for delivery to Ukraine within approximately three weeks. The remaining two systems are planned for delivery in December 2024 and February 2025.
GCS currently supports mine action operations in Ukraine with a fleet of nearly sixty mechanical demining systems, alongside training, technical support and local service and maintenance capacity.
Dmytro Salimonov, General Manager GCS Ukraine, commented on the significance of the handover:
"Sustained clearance at scale depends on local capability. Our approach combines mechanical systems with training, service support and long?term presence. This handover reflects the progress made through cooperation with Ukrainian authorities and international partners."
The conference also saw the adoption of the Lausanne Call to Action, reinforcing international commitment to coordinated and effective mine action as a foundation for recovery and safe land use.
