In May 2024, the City of Hamburg confirmed its support for Ukraine's demining efforts through the delivery of the first of four GCS-200 mechanical demining platforms, including associated attachments, supplied by Global Clearance Solutions (GCS). The systems will be deployed with the National Police of Ukraine, with operational use scheduled to begin in June.
Public support for clearance capability
The delivery forms part of Hamburg's broader commitment to Ukraine, with approximately €10 million allocated to humanitarian support, including medical supplies and demining equipment. The contribution builds on Hamburg's Pact for Solidarity and Future and is partly funded through donations from the city's population.
The remaining three GCS-200 systems funded under this initiative are scheduled for delivery from August onwards.

Mechanical demining for operational use
The GCS-200 is a remotecontrolled, multipurpose platform designed to support explosive hazard clearance in highrisk environments. Once deployed, the systems will support policeled clearance operations aimed at reducing explosive risk in affected areas and enabling safer access for civilians and recovery activities.
During the handover, Andy Grote, Senator of the Interior of the City of Hamburg, underlined the importance of clearance efforts:
"The mining of large parts of Ukraine is one of the greatest dangers that the war poses to the population there."
Clearance as a prerequisite for recovery
The delivery was also attended by representatives of Ukraine's diplomatic mission in Germany, reflecting the link between demining and broader recovery objectives.
Oleksii Makeiev, Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany, emphasised the role of clearance in rebuilding normal life:
"Securing Ukrainian land is the first step for all further processes of recovery and normalisation of life."
From delivery to deployment
GCS technical specialists supported the handover by demonstrating system operation and preparing the platform for onward deployment. Once in service, the systems will be integrated into Ukrainian clearance workflows alongside trained operators and existing national capabilities.
By supporting the delivery and operational readiness of mechanical demining systems, GCS contributes to international efforts to reduce explosive risk and enable safer conditions for civilians, infrastructure restoration and economic recovery in Ukraine.
